Hello Janette,
I found the participatory-collaborative model for creating progess in curriculm development very interesting. What role does gender play as these groups create new approaches to teaching-learning in China?
Thanks for the feedback (and apologies for the sound lagging behind the visuals – I’ll try to get this fixed). I’m not really sure about your question, but I can say that like schools in most countries, female teachers are in the majority but certainly seem to be in leadership positions as much as males. The main ‘on the ground’ member of the project team, Principal Liu of Beijing No 4 Primary School, is female and is a driving froce behind the whole project. She is truly inspirational. We also have some real firebrand female teachers in Inner Mongolia who are also key members of the project team on the ground. We have lots of videos of the ways that students interact inthe classroom (which we have witnessed) and there are certainly plenty of examples of very assertive girls! Some of the government leaders involved are also female. So apart from the gender imbalance in the teaching profession generally (world-wide I suspect) gender hasn’t really been a significant issue. I’m not sure if this answers your question though.
